Wavelengths is a portrait series of ex-lovers, inspired by pendant paintings from the Late Medieval Period. Both models were asked to draw a line to describe the course of their relationship with each other. These two individual timelines of ups-and-downs are placed in the background of the portraits, forming a kind of emotional landscape. Instead of glorifying a current love connection, which we often tend to do, the Wavelengths series instead can be seen as an ode to past relationships. In all its awkwardness. Within the romantic and monumental setting of the portraits, the sadness that usually accompanies a break-up shines through.

We tend to glorify our current relationships over those that have ended. And that makes sense. But despite the fact that the relationship didn’t last, an ex is still likely to have been an important part of your life. For a while you’ve shared everything and went through ups and down together. The fact that you’ve had such a strong connection with someone is something you’re allowed to look back on with love and pride.

The visual language of the series seems rather grand. The arch shape reminds us of religious imagery and the soft colours feel romantic. The portraits themselves almost seem iconic and serene. Yet the people in them, especially viewed from up-close, look sombre and vulnerable. It’s a side to us we usually only show the people we are close with. The slightly gloomy look also refers to the sadness that usually accompanies a breakup.

Because the models are turned towards each other and because of the shared background, the two portraits clearly belong side by side. Still, there is no direct contact between the two. The models glance past each other and, this way, they stay isolated as individuals. This individuality is also represented in the background. Both models separately described their relationship by drawing a line. In the images these lines are brought together and thus the inevitable difference in individual interpretation and experience of the time together becomes visible.

‘Wavelengths’ is een serie portretten van ex-stellen, geïnspireerd op tweeluik schilderijen uit de Middeleeuwse schilderkunst. Beide modellen werden gevraagd een lijn te tekenen om het verloop van hun relatie met elkaar te beschrijven. Die twee lijnen vormen het ‘landschap’ dat zich in de achtergrond van de portretten uitstrekt.

We zijn meer gewend om onze huidige relaties te verheerlijken dan de relaties die geëindigd zijn. Dat is niet zo gek, want het is vaak lastig om je te verhouden tot een ex. Maar ondanks dat de relatie geen standhield, heeft diegene waarschijnlijk wel een belangrijke rol in je leven gespeeld. Een tijd lang heb je alles met elkaar gedeeld en ups en downs meegemaakt. Dat je zo’n band met iemand hebt gehad, daar mag best met trots en liefde op worden teruggekeken. De “Wavelengths” serie kun je dan ook zien als een ode- of aandenken aan deze relaties uit het verleden.

De serie heeft in zijn uiterlijk iets verheffends. De boog doet denken aan religieuze beelden en de zachte kleuren doen romantisch aan. De portretten zelf krijgen bijna een iconisch karakter. Toch lijken de mensen die afgebeeld zijn, vooral van dichtbij bekeken, somber en kwetsbaar. Een kant die we meestal alleen de mensen laten zien die dicht bij ons staan. De wat terneergeslagen blik refereert op zijn beurt ook naar het verdriet dat meestal gepaard gaat met het einde van een relatie.

Doordat de gezichten naar elkaar toe gedraaid zijn en de achtergrond doorloopt, gaan de twee portretten duidelijk een relatie met elkaar aan. Toch is er geen direct contact tussen beiden. De modellen kijken langs elkaar heen en blijven zo toch ook vooral individuen. Dit individuele karakter is ook terug te vinden in de achtergrond. De modellen beschreven allebei, los van elkaar, de verloopt van hun relatie in een lijn. Door deze twee lijnen achter elkaar te plaatsen worden de onvermijdelijke verschillen in de individuele ervaring van de tijd samen zichtbaar.
